Dogs.. Did your dog get nippy and aggressive when you brought baby home?

My Grampa's Yorkie is stupidly aggressive when my friend brings her year old son around. The dog has even bitten the baby a couple times...

Did anyone else's dogs do this? What did you do? I will probably wring the dog's neck if she bites my baby or gets aggressive.. But it's not my dog.

I've already started training my dogs, cat, and pig. I let them into the nursery to sniff things and turn the mobile on and have the sound of a crying baby in the background when they go in there. I've been walking up and down the driveway with the stroller and the dogs on leash so they get used to walks with the stroller. I'm also getting a crying baby doll to hold and carry around the house. When the baby is born I'm going to send my mom home with a blanket that smells like baby before I come home so the animals can all sniff the blanket and get used to the new scent. Animals are like people. They need time to adapt to new situations. They get scared and go on guard when their routines are abruptly interrupted. Each time we got a new pet we did a whole introduction routine as well so we are definitely doing it for the baby. I hope you figure out a solution for your grandpa's dog!

No, we have a very hyper/aggressive cattle dog and she fell in love the second she saw her. We included her in everything, brought a blanket home, played videos of babies crying, etc. She did well! Excited to see her do it again soon :)

Try to involve the dog as much as you can. Our baby Max(Great Dane/lab mix) was the baby behind our 6 yo and I included him in everything. Even got my husband to sneak out a hospital blanket with her scent to him. He was VERY protective with her! You have to keep in mind they are like children you wouldn't neglect your other children or send them out so don't treat them in such a way. With my 6yo when he was born I lived with parents and we had an Akita- Boudreaux and he was also very protective with him.

I had a Yorkie when I had my last baby almost 6 years ago. He was my baby until she was born. He was very aggressive with her and nipped at her often from the time I brought her home. So much so that we had to keep him outside or in his room away from her. After 2 years and a few bites (not major finger missing bites but nips) later he never warmed up to her. He ended up running away and we never found him. I was heartbroken but at least we didn't have to worry about keeping him away from our little girl. I don't really understand what happened because I also had my 9 & 8 yo who grew up with him and he loved those two. I just figured that I could no longer give him the majority of my attention and he got very jealous.

Dogs sense problems and other things. Both My dog gets aggressive with my friends kids one who is Down's syndrome and one whom is austistic. All other children they are very friendly with. Maybe give it a try and see his/her reaction to another child. ❤️best of luck!

We had to rehome our fog last spring because of agression toward young children and babies. It was a horrible time and such a hard decision. Never thought I'd give up an animal. But we tried everything - 2 different trainers, hormone collars, positive reinforcement, extra attention...we knew he was somewhat bitey but kept thinking he'd outgrow it it, but even with constant training, he didnt. We was hand raised in a house with young kids, and when we got him as a puppy, our kids were 4 and 6 and were very respectful and careful with him. But for whatever reason he was always very anxious around small children and babies. And he was very protective of me. If I held a baby or paid attention to a baby/young child that was not my own, he'd flip out and try to bite them and get between the child and myself. He was pretty good with my kids and was my snuggly guy...but when you see your sweet dog trying to bite at a baby's feet or lunge at a 3 year old, or try to chase after a neighborhood kid who came into the yard and play (yes he was on a leash), you realize that for the safety of the kids in your life, that you can't have a dog like that. It was painful to say goodbye but he honestly has the best family now. It's like they were meant to be. And they send us pictures and updates on him regularly.

Btw, he was a Bichon Frise - usually a great breed for families and kids.

Maggie didn't get aggressive or really show any attention to baby. (She had a few litters of pups before this and had just given birth 2 to 3 months prior). Sage, Maggie's pup, wanted to play with the baby and didn't understand that baby was not another pup so she did some playful nipping at the baby's feet and would try to take off with baby's toys.

Maybe start trying to introduce baby things around the house... play crying noises... carry a baby doll sounds crazy but get the dog used to the idea of a little one around

I want to say it's the breed. We have a yorkie and whenever anyone comes over he gets super hyper to the point I am embarrassed. I think he is undercover aggressive as well. He escaped from the bathroom went upstairs to the babies room and ripped apart stuff, clothes everywhere, and even pee'd in there. At this point I hate him! I fear for our baby once he comes home. I don't trust that dog at all. I really think it's the breed because I've been around other dogs and none have acted that way

With my first, had my ex bring home a blanket I had had my son wrapped in all day for them to smell and get used to. The dogs adapted fairly easily. Big dogs. Lol. Buddy had issues later on when the kid would provoke him, but got better.

Make sure you just keep baby out of reach and/or separated until the dog accepts him and keep an eye on both. See how it goes.
