baby coughing ftm

So my mil and fil was over today and was holding my 9 day old baby and his mom has a cough she's always had it since I've known her (she smokes as well) well tonight while holding him to get him to sleep he coughed 3 times ! I plan on calling the doctor tomorrow but should I not wait and just call or wait??
