what are the "bases"?

I'm not from America but when I got here people talked about "bases" I don't know what they are! Can anyone explain?

You mean like "I got to 3rd base with her last night"? 1st base is kissing/making out. 2nd base is touching, usually the upper region of the body, either bare skin or through clothing (like touching a woman's breasts would be reaching 2nd base). 3rd base is touching lower regions of the body (i.e. genitals). Then homerun is having sex.

I will say, as an American, I actually had to look it up to get the specifics.

The bases refer to bases in baseball except sex. I learned what they are from Looking for Alaska. First base is making out/kissing, second base is groping, third base is like fingering, and home (or fourth base, I've heard both used) is having intercourse, whatever you count that as.
