birth control for cramps?

So my doctor put me on birth control for my period cramps and to regulate my period; however, she said it's not used to prevent pregnancy. Is this true? I figured all forms of birth control can prevent pregnancy and/or make it hard for you to get pregnant

Answer

When they give you birth control for cramps it's a very low dose (I'm on it now ) but if you're sexually active it's best to get a higher dose. It won't prevent as well with a low dose
