Doctor could feel her head but couldn't tell if I was dilated...a little help understanding please.

Hmmm!! My doctor felt with her hands by pushing on my stomach and pelvic area to check to see if my baby was head down. She said if she couldn't feel her head she was going to do an ultrasound. She checked to see if I was Dilated but my cervix was so far back, she had me make 2 fists and put under my butt cheeks and she checked my cervix that way and I was 2-3 cm Dilated..
