My boyfriend said he won't go to prom with me..

So my boyfriend and I are long distance (about 2 hours) and have been together (a little bit on and off) for almost 3 years now. I told him that I want him to come to prom with me in the spring and he said he won't.. he's never went to a HS dance (his choice not to) because he said he hates that kinda stuff and that it makes him feel awkward. I was honestly really upset because it's only 2/3 hours long and I obviously wouldn't leave his side unless he felt comfortable with me doing so.. I don't want to go with anyone else but him but I also don't want to go alone. I wouldn't want him to be super uncomfortable but sometimes he's just overly shy/awkward about things that he shouldn't be and even though I try my best to be understanding it's just hard sometimes. What should I do? :(
