Updated apartment or spacious older house?

My fiancé and I have been debating whether we want a nice new apartment or an older home. We will just be renting so this isn't a long term problem or anything, but we can't decide. I'd love to feel like I was living in luxury, having a nice (but small) apartment with stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, granite countertops...but I'd also love more private and open space, which would come with renting an older place that isn't as updated. What would you choose?
