why delayed cord clamping?

Let's start this off with saying I'm not making any stance for or against it!

I just don't know what it's for- like what are the benefits of the delay? Would they do it right as the baby comes out otherwise? I know so little about these sorts of things!

Just curious if it's something I need to be thinking about!

In my country they don't clamp the cord until the placenta stops pumping blood to the baby. It was explained to me that the babies blood supply is in the placenta, so it wouldn't do the baby any good to clamp and cut before the blood is back with your baby and where it belongs

Delayed cord clamping allows the blood from the placenta to pump into the baby after birth. They report that it can lessen anemia. If you don't choose to do this, they will likely clamp, then cut the cord from the placenta immediately after birth.

My OB says it's a bunch of BS. Literally his words. You'll find articles for it and against it, both with studies finding either it helps or does nothing. What it boils down to is personal choices/beliefs. It doesn't hurt anything so do whichever you want.

I did 😁 and I loved it! Had skin to skin the whole time, didn't have anyone faffing and rushing to put cord clamps and cut it etc. I read the benefits of it and it helped in my decision to do so. But if something was wrong with the baby I wouldn't have cared if we couldn't do it. To me, if baby comes out healthy, why rush cutting the cord even if there is no benefits of delaying it as some articles state?  Only you can decide, but I did it with my daughter and will be doing it with my second, due in 8 weeks, planned home birth xxx

I never knew what it was till my doula explained it last week. Basically your placenta provides blood to your baby until you cut the cord, so by allowing the placenta to stop on its own you are giving the extra 'nutrients' to the babe. But there are others who argue it can cause jaundice and liver issues.

Personally I don't think it makes a difference. Some need to cut it right away if they have to take the baby to be tested and if you delay it, you can continue to enjoy skin to skin contact. Either way your baby will love you haha

My Doc said there is a proven benefit for babies born prematurely. He said although there isn't any for full-term babies, it definitely won't hurt. We plan on it!

Delayed cord clamping, which is waiting for the cord to stop pulsating before cutting it, is like giving your baby a megashot of iron and raises his hemoglobin levels as he transitions into life. We are delaying cord clamping and planning on lots of skin to skin with baby immediately after birth--another huge benefit😊

I recommend looking up the benefits of delayed clamping. I don't remember them all off the top of my head but it can help certain illnesses in the future that cord blood banking helps cure. 😊
