Sex can certainly be helpful to initiate labor. It works in three ways: first the hormones released during sexual activity. Oxytocin (the pair bonding hormone) is part of the cascade of hormones involved in the labor and delivery process. Kickstating it with intimate contact, orgasm and nipple stimulation can all help release that hormone. Second, the physical contact of the penis with the cervix and physical nature of orgasm can result in physical changes that stimulate labor - it's like knocking on the door that is already ajar - it may start to open more. Third, seminal fluid contains prostaglandins, which also are part of the labor/delivery cascade, and a shot of them right to the cervix can help begin/continue effacement and dilation. 
Sex won't put you in labor of your body isn't already starting to get ready, but it can definitely help as you get closer, and kick things into a higher gear.
