Getting an IUD?

Question

I'm turning 18 tomorrow and I've been on the pill since seventh grade. But as my life got busier I've been forgetting to take it and it messed up my periods and I need another option since I am sexually active. 
I looked into the implant but saw too many horror stories about 6 month periods and got weirded out. 
So I am looking into the IUD. 
How has everyone's experience with it been? 
And how would I go about getting it? Could I just see my doctor?

I did and I hated it. It was the Skyla and the insertion wasn't exactly pleasant. I had it for 8 months and during the entire time I would get random sharp stabbing pains, headache, increase in anxiety which lead to going on anxiety medication, and acne. It also causes ovarian cysts. When the strings went missing and I had to get an ultrasound to make sure it didn't imbed into my uterus, I decided I was done and had it taken out.
