When to tell our 6 year old

Question

I had the idea of telling our daughter at our first sono appointment when I will be 12 weeks 2 days. My husband is apprehensive due to a friend of ours going to her first sono and them telling her there was no heartbeat. Any thoughts or experiences with this? Thank you!

I got pregnant last year & we didn't tell my stepson, he had just turned 5 @ the time, we found out @ our 1st ultrasound @ 8 weeks that it had stopped growing @ 6 weeks, we were very thankful that we hadn't told him as it was difficult enough giving the sad news to all the adults we had told. This time around we waited until AFTER the 1st ultrasound (which was @ 7w2d) & we also told him that sometimes when babies r super small in their mommy's belly something happens to make them stop growing & then they have to go back up to heaven. We say prayers w/ him every night so we told him that all we could do was pray that baby would stay healthy & grow up big & strong & the rest was in God's hands, obviously if you're not religious u would have to adapt this to your situation but this worked well for us, I'm currently 27w4d along & so far baby girl & I r doing great :)

We told our son the day we got the positive test because he's always asking about babies and wanting a brother or sister. Just before my first ultrasound, I felt like maybe we should've waited just in case but then we thought disappointment and loss are a part of life and he's 6 so he'd understand. We told him that I need to the doctor so that he can look in the monitor and see if the baby is growing or not. Thankfully all went well.

I also know someone who brought their 4/5 yr old to the first ultrasound and they found no heartbeat. It's entirely up to you, but may be harder for a small child to understand if the worst does happen.
