Nighttime BFing

If you breastfeed, do you always nurse baby when they wake in the night? Or depending on how long from the last feed? For example, if he/she woke at 2, nursed, and then woke up and started fussing/whining at like 3:30... would you go ahead and nurse or try something else to soothe? Like pacifier, etc.

And what is your nighttime feeding routine like? Do you nurse laying in bed and then put baby back in bed, etc? Some kind of chair? I'm just trying to determine if there is an easier/more efficient routine than what I do. We're not cosleeping currently and he is in rock and play next to my bed.
