Did your husband/fiancé ask your parents for permission before proposing?

I'm just curious to see how all of you ladies feel about this. My husband talked to my mom and stepdad, and called my dad that lives 10 hours away and asked them permission (which we knew they'd be okay with). But give me your opinions on why it is/isn't important!:)

I'm not engaged, but I know that if my current boyfriend wants to propose he will ask my dad first. I think it is important, it may be old school or traditional but it's a sign of respect and I think that's important.

I think it's subjective to each couple. To some people, having dad's permission and support is very important. For others, like me, it doesn't matter. My husband didn't even meet my dad until a couple days before the wedding because he lives out of state and we're not very close. Plus I didn't like the idea of him needing "permission" to marry me, it made me feel like it was passing ownership from dad to husband and it just rubbed me wrong. But like I said, it's different for everyone and whatever makes the couple happy is what they should do.

My fiance knows exactly how I feel about it, luckily. I feel that sometimes traditions need to change, since women are not seen as objects being sold anymore. If my fiance would have asked their permission, I would've said no to him.

My husband didn't so much "ask permission", but rather informed them of his intentions and gave them the opportunity to speak about it before it happened. So it was respectful towards my parents, but not the traditional asking permission.

We went out for dinner with my dad. My dad asks when are we getting married. My fiancé said he needs to ask my dad first. My dad said he has "his stamp of approval," so my fiancé didn't ask because my dad approved it. Now my dad is saying he should have asked. I personally think I am not an item that needs to be given and am ok with him not asking. I do not want my parents walking me down the aisle either. I am not a possession.

My husband asked my sister first, then my mom, and then my dad (he worked up from "easiest" to "hardest" he said). Although it is  traditional, I also think it's a sign of respect. I personally would have been really upset if he did not ask or have my family's blessing. My family is also relatively traditional, so I know my dad would have been upset if my husband didn't ask either.

I was 36 when my hubby proposed, also my family are liberal folks from the Pacific Northwest we aren't traditionalists it would have felt awkward & strangely formal for him to "ask permission"

No. I am not close with my dad and I wouldn't have cared whether my dad said yes or no. It was my decision to marry him, no one elses.

I don't have the best relationship with my father so he didn't ask him. My mom on the other hand kept asking him when he was going to propose! Lol
