Backyard & Outdoor Dogs: Cruel or Not?

Growing up my family had an outdoor dog. My grandpa had one too. Both dogs had hard lives. I never understood it and would NEVER have my dogs live outdoors now. It breaks my heart to see a single dog stuck outside all day, confined to a backyard in the 'burbs. Seems like a strange lonely life.

So what's the point? Am I missing something? Do you agree with keeping pet dogs outside 99% of the time or do you think it's cruel?
