My daughter started food at about 18 or 19 weeks- about 4 months. Just tiny amounts of puréed fruit or vegetable, 1 serving a day to start with. Babies need nutrition from food by about 6 months and if they're only just tasting it then it might not be enough. From my very limited anecdotal experience, babies who started solids later tended to be fussier eaters and still are at 3 years old. If you're unsure check with your dr. Make sure they still don't have that tongue reflex where they push stuff out of their mouth.

My sons doctor told me it was perfectly fine to start him on some rice cereal before he had a bottle. He's turned out just fine. Most research these days say it's perfectly fine to start your infant on "solids" at 4-6 months. It really depends on if the baby is capable of accepting solids.

My niece was so hungry all the time so my brother started her on rice cereal at 3 months. At 4 months she was sitting up so they started her on baby food. If your baby is always hungry I would. But only once a day like right before bed. That's what they started her on.
