Do you buy large ticket (things over $300) without telling your spouse

Long story short my husband bought a rifle for $900( which he continues to tell me is a bargain from the $2,000 original price). That's swell in all BUT we have $4,000 in medical bills, mortgage, taxes due, car payments, and EVERYTHING else people pay for. I'm pissed that he hid it from me.

We don't share money beyond joint bills. He just bought ANOTHER $2,500 guitar (he has 5 already). I told him he's crazy to spend his money on that, but it's his money. If we had bills that weren't being paid or were concerned can't be paid or if he complains about being broke, I would have gotten mad for sure. Jokes on him, he forgot property taxes are due in two weeks and it's the exact same amount he spent on his guitar. He can't complain though since he did it to himself.

We don't ask each other. We both make money, and we spend it how we want. However, we make sure that expenses come first. We refuse to have debt, and if an emergency occurs, it gets paid before buying any extras.

It depends. If it's joint finances, of course we'll discuss it considering 50% of the money is his. If it's money that I have saved up from my own job and there's nothing else that requires money (for example, insurance, payments etc.), then I don't feel it necessary to discuss.

I think it depends on the couple and how they make financial decisions. My SO and I share everything and have a joint account, no matter who makes what we share. We also have very little spending money after bills so any big items we have to talk about and it's usually lame adult stuff like new tires or medical bills. It would be insane if one of us spent that much without telling!!
