Why is my piroed so wiered

So I am getting ready to turn 12 and I started at 10 and I can have a piriod for a day or 3 months and then not have one for months is this normal and I am wanting to no why... people always say it is bc of stress but I don't think that is why

I remember going to the doctor with my friend once because she would go months without having a period and they were worried there was something wrong. It turned out it was because she was exercising a lot.
