my partner and i have recently became sexually active (just oral so far) but i was curious if you can still get an STI even though you have only been with that person?

Yes you can. Anything transmittable doesn't only come from gettin around. Your best bet is to both get tested because if you're trying to say he might have been with someone else before, you may be the only one with it. It is possible. But I'm not sure the context of your Q so just get tested together

Unfortunately yes you can. Herpes simplex one (oral heroes) can be transferred "down under" from your mouth. The hard thing is that normal STI tests don't test for it. You can get oral herpes from sharing drinks with someone who has it. And the kicker: the person giving it to you does not have to have symptoms.

I know all this from experience. My first bf went down on me ONCE and I got it. He was confused bc he had never had it and been tested for STIs for a program he participated in. But he was my only experience so we both knew it came from him and my doc confirmed

If you are BOTH eacho other's firsts, you shouldn't get an sti from that person. But it is possible if they were infected in another way. Ex) injection or any other way.
