Doctor lectured me on being too young to have a baby?!

I went into the doctor expecting to be helped. I haven't been ovulating, and my husband of one year and I have been TTC since around the time we got married. I'm 20 years old, we own a home together that we bought when we were first married, and we are ready for a baby. My doctor (his name was Dr. Altman)  spent the entire appointment telling me why I shouldn't have a baby and should wait until I'm at least 25-30 (um what?) and then said "you know babies are a big deal!" Yeah, I know that. I was so angry! And what makes me even more upset is I had to pay for that joke of an appointment (hadn't met my deductible yet). It was not his place to state his opinion, whether he believed that or or not. I went for help and got bashed instead.

Omg not that it really matters because it is ur choice regardless, but does he not know ur a married woman??? Not a teenager living with mom still in HS?

I hope you find a new dr and report him to the medical board not only for discrimination based on age but also for refusing to help and voicig is personal views instead of medical professional opinions

We had something like that happen to us unmarried young (we were both 20 when our son was born) interracial couple with a baby in the nicu at a very catholic hospital they withheld his discharge information from us meaning we asked every time we went to see him and they would keep saying when the drs say he can go home the drs never would give us even a possible date just oh wait a bit longer ended up my son in foster care for just under a year as we didnt know the discharge info and could tell my husbands job a date he would need off

After my son passed away (he was a week old), I asked my OB to write me a prescription for an emotional support animal. He handed me the prescription and had the audacity to say, "Uh, dogs are a lot of responsibility, you know."

I lashed out and said I was prepared to raise a child that I never got to take home so I sure as hell can handle a dog.

Doctors can be the biggest douchebags and say completely unprofessional things out of their personal opinions.

I had to deal with a similar situation. I'm 20 as well. I've found a good doctor now who is very helpful though.

Girl, time to get a new doctor! Doctors are supposed to provide you with all of your medical options, the risks, etc. Personal opinions should never enter into the conversation.

Yeah when I thought I was pregnant both the nurse and doctor were both asking why don't I wait ... smh but the lady who is doing my ultrasound in 2 weeks acts like she didn't even notice how old I am and me and my husbands age difference !! I love her so much, she prayed for all of us including the baby !

I had a doctor like that once too. I had just found out I had adenomyosis which can make concieving more difficult and she told me that she wouldn't answer my questions because I'm too young to even be thinking about it😂 I'm not nor have I ever ttc because I'm waiting until I accomplish some more goals of mine so it definitely caught me off guard. Let's just say I never saw her again and found myself a new doctor who is much more caring about what's going on. Get a new doctor, there's no reason for that type of response unless they've got a teen or younger in there

I know it's hard to accept an opinion like that but I think you should understand that his intention was good. Why else would he even bother giving you any advice? If I were you I would consider his opinion and give the whole thing a second thought. In the end you are the one who will have the final say, obviously, but it doesn't hurt to consider a doctor's advice!

I don't think I would be offended I would take into consideration that he knows more about raising children then me. He's not trying to be rude I'm sure he is just trying to tell you to enjoy your life because children slow things down. Things change when kids come and once you have a child you are a parent FOREVER... No breaks no time outs from parenting.. It's hard I was a parent at 18 and again at 21 my son had ear infections all the time. He was vomiting all the time with fevers it was challenging not to mention he got into everything. He would wake up before everyone and get into the fridge and destroy my house with food. Don't be offended at his advise it sounds like he had good intentions.
