HELP! Birth Control Side Effect??

So I just started birth control pills last month and when I got my period this month it has been way longer and way heavier than it ever was when I wasn't taking birth control. Is this normal?? I thought birth control pills were supposed to make periods shorter and lighter?? Of course it's my luck that birth control makes my periods more awful
