Cervical Cap or Diaphragm?

Question

I'm just a month off the mirena after two years and was interested in the cervical cap. I'm not looking for hormonal birth control and wanted to know other women's experience with the cap. The good, bad, and ugly. Also what's the difference between that and a diaphragm? Thanks!

I don't know much about the cap but I am a diaphragm user. Although both methods have a higher failure rate that most contraceptive, they can be effective when used correctly. A diaphragm isn't difficult to use after the doctor demonstrates how to insert and remove it during your fitting. It must be used with spermicide or an alternative like contragel/caya gel to increase effectiveness. The diaphragm can be inserted any time prior to intercourse. It must be left in at least 6-12 hours (advice varies) after intercourse to increase effectiveness. If you're having multiple rounds of intercourse, you must apply more spermicide in your vagina each time. To use this type of birth control, you have to be comfortable touching inside your vagina and have to know where your cervix is for the correct placement.

I haven't been using a diaphragm for long but my experience has been positive so far. I refuse to be on hormonal birth control and I'm not too fond getting an copper iud due to my own fear of pain during insertion. This narrowed it down to barrier methods only and FAM( I don't have time or patience lol). The diaphragm feels very comfortable and neither I or my partner can feel it. It also doesn't effect natural lubrication or arousal. I find it easy to insert and remove as I practiced prior to using it the first time. It also doesn't effect spontaneity due the quick insertion or you can also prepare prior by putting it in hours in advance. You can also have your partner put in for you as part of foreplay (some people like that idea). I personally choose to double up with condoms as I can't have children right now and I'm a bit paranoid. It's still effective on it's own.

The Cervical Cap is similar to a diaphragm but is smaller has to be inserted directly on the cervix and suction to it. It also has to be used with spermicide or an alternative. Unlike a diaphragm, the cervical cap has to be inserted before you are sexual aroused as this will effect the suction.

Hey I was just about to post something similar. I want to start using the diaghram and was looking for responses. From what I understand after you have had children the cervical cap is not as effective, whereas the diaghram is still effective
