boy issues

So I've had this guy best friend for over a year now and we always tell eachother everything and he's just my go to person . Well back in January we started "talking" and I caught feelings really quick and I got scared and didn't want to risk our friendship so I told him we need to just stay friends , well then in April he got a girlfriend who hated me and wouldn't let us talk , that's when I realized how in love with him I was . He would text me randomly off his moms phone so she wouldn't know and things like that and I just missed him more than anything in the world . The was controlling and crazy so he broke up with her about a month ago and now he's trying to talk to me again ... I love this boy with everything in me but would dating him be the Right thing to do ?
