Have I been wearing my rings wrong?? I was told that the engagement ring goes on first then the band goes on top when I got married from my friends that's been nagging on me telling me I'm wearing it wrong when I was told this way by the people that got us married.

The story is that when you do something that involves getting your hands dirty you only remove the engagement ring. 
Personally I'd take both off. 
I had mine fused together so it's all or nothing
