Can you get pregnant while breastfeeding?

breastfeeding?" /> This might be a dumb question but I was told that you don't get a period while breastfeeding. If that's the case, does that mean you don't ovulate?? We want another baby eventually but not in the first year of having this one. If I'm breastfeeding will I even need birth control??

Yes you can! My best friend got pregnant while breast feeding.

My best friend has 4 kids under 4, all of whom (minus baby #1) were conceived while she was breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding isn't a reliable BC, especially after having a baby...you are at your most fertile. If you don't want another baby right away I would look into other options of prevention

I was breastfeeding my daughter when I got pregnant with my son, I hadn't even had a period yet. So, if nothing else, use condoms lol

I can think of 4 people off the top of my head who got pregnant while breastfeeding. All 4 did not have a period between childbirth and their subsequent pregnancies.

I exclusively breastfed and didn't get a period for 9 months. I had sex did not get preegnant. Once my baby started eating more solids my period returned and I became fertile again. Depends on the persons body and how you breastfeed

I was breastfeeding, my period hadn't yet returned and I fell pregant when my daughter was 11 months old.

I got pregnant while breastfeeding my son, I was told that it was a natural form of birth control by two separate doctors. They're liars! I got pregnant when my son was 11 months, I had no period yet and had not used birth control due to the reassurance from my doctors that I could not get pregnant while breastfeeding. We weren't ready but are happier than ever to be expecting our daughter February 17th. If your not ready for another little I'd suggest some form of birth control.

My doctor showed me some research about the effectiveness of breast feeding as birth control. It said it can be up to 97% effective if you breast feed at least every 4 hours, have not had your period yet post-pregnancy, and are under 6 months pregnant. He likened it to a condoms effectiveness.  
That being said, he was still keen to offer a birth control prescription so I'm not sure how confident he was in the effectiveness of that research.
