What should I do about my early Christmas gift? (Details in post)

My wonderful husband and dad-to-be asked me what I wanted for Christmas and since I don't have nice jewelry apart from costume jewelry, there was a necklace that caught my eye. Originally on the commercials I thought it was $149 which is too much for him to spend since we just paid for our whole wedding in August and we're expecting our first child in less than 6 weeks. We live paycheck to paycheck, and I'm hoping we can buy a house in a few years since we are currently renting a 1 bedroom apartment. I was wrong about the price and it was actually $999, which was double what he gave me for a wedding gift. It is soooooo out of our budget! He already gave me my "push present", we're leasing a new car. I just feel so uncomfortable about it. I really love it but I never spend money on me, nor do I own anything fancy. I feel like we could take that $1100 and go see a Broadway show or go away for the weekend; I'm more about experiences than gifts. He's really upset about it and it makes him feel like he can't provide nor spoil me. I am boggled and there's nobody to talk about it since my friends are pretty jealous. I didn't tell them how much it was just that it's expensive. Should I keep it? Return it? Comments and help are appreciated!!!

If he was willing to buy it I'd say keep it. He wouldn't of bought it if he didn't think he could swing it.

Oh wow that's a toughie. My mind goes practical. If it's simply not something you can afford then thats the reality. He can't provide it because it's just not in your budget. Not because he's a bad husband or father. If I were in your shoes, I would have a very, very loving talk about why you need to return it. Put it on you. Say you simply cannot sleep at night and as much as you love him for getting it, it's making YOU feel awful. You don't need to say anything about not being able to afford it . Say you just think about all the things youd rather spend it on and you can't enjoy it.

Sometimes mommys need car and jewelry. I've learned in my own experience, if you give something back it's far more rude than to just keep it. Plus it's a once in a lifetime gift. Hello!? $1k necklace.. holy Christ

I am not a jewelry person (hubby gives a big sigh of relief), but I DID ask for one of those Infinity Heart necklaces from Kay Jewelers two years back. I only wanted the small one, which was still pricey in my opinion at almost $150, but then hubby bought a larger version with more inset diamonds at a much higher price point.
 
That being said, my hubby is the practical penny pincher one in our relationship.  I was shocked.  I still wear it and absolutely love it.  He obviously thought it was enough of an investment and felt it was worth it.
 
So I would say keep it and remember that while YEA it was expensive, your husband thought that the price was secondary to getting you something nice.  (Hugs)

I say keep it, yes it's expensive & you can do something else with the money. But I know how I feel when my husband returns a gift that meant a lot to me to be able to give to him. It got to the point where I don't buy him anything anymore because it makes me feel like crap when he returns it. Sometimes being "practical" isn't worth it
