What age should a child get a phone?

This is obviously a personal opinion and situations vary due to circumstances, but I'm curious - when do you plan on giving your child a phone and why? My grandmother just bought my 3 year old cousin a phone (with minutes)! I thought it was kind of silly..

It depends. 
Say my child walked from home to school and vice versa. They would definitely have a phone. Even if it's just a phone to call/text. 
If it's just to have a phone.. 12-13?

Got a flip phone at 12. Had a couple of those until I got my first iPhone at 16. A kid having a phone under the age of 12 is just unnecessary and a waste of money. Get the kid a dog or a coloring book or some friends

Well I got my first phone when I was 13. I don't think a three year old should have a phone though. My 6 year old nephew has a phone all just to watch YouTube and watch other kids play with toys and pick up on violent language. However because of this he doesn't do good in school at all and not to mention he's disrespectful as shit! But what can I tell his mom? Nothing, just let the parent over the child feel the consequences behind it like my sister is Doing. That boy disrespects her and goes to school and learns nothing. Anyway I wouldn't bother the situation too much. But I do think it's silly for a 3 year old to have a phone. No child that young should be privileged enough to own a cellphone with minutes on it and all.

I would probably say that 13-14 would be the best age, that's when they start getting more independent and going with friends alone, I wouldn't get them an IPhone or anything to that extreme, just a phone to call to let you know they're okay and what time they will be home

In this day and age, I highly recommend that kids know everything to do with technology. A phone is necessary to keep in contact with them. An IPad would be suitable for the little ones for playing games and just learning new things but at the age of 12 or 13, they definitely need a phone. Hope that helped :)
