Bio mom here.  My ex husband has a girlfriend of 7 years and another child together. My son calls them, his stepmom and brother. I've never celebrated her birthday or anything, but I'll help my son make her a card or pick out something small for Mothers Day. I think the important thing to remember is accepting the idea of an extended family that my son belongs to. Because that is his family and  home just as much as I am. I think all blended families have a responsibility to protect the relationships between parent and child and step parent and child. Even if that person was terrible to you, that has nothing to do with the child's relationship. I know that's not what you asked, but I don't see that attitude very often. Children should not be put in the middle of adults problems or hurt feelings. So yes buy a gift if you're the step patent or bio parent, because to your child that is someone they care about.

I wouldn't, personally, but I'd happily fund it if the kid wanted to get something for her mom.
