Do things "happen for a reason"?

Like when something terrible happens & someone tells you it "happened for a reason," do you believe that? Or do you think things just happen because it's life & parts of life are supposed to suck?

I'm an atheist. It's hard to believe things happen for a reason when you don't believe in a higher power. I don't think kids die horrible deaths, for a reason. They die because sometimes life sucks and disease is not discriminatory, and because accidents happen, and because some people are horrible people.

No I don't believe that. Even the Bible says that some times we are just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Shit happens, this present life is like that. We have good times and bad times. However, bad things happen because the devil is in control of the world at the moment and he influences people to be the way they are.

I think it's just a "nice" lie we tell ourselves to make us feel better. Sort of how when Christians say "god works in mysterious ways".

I think the only reason bad things "happen for a reason" is purely just to keep balance in the universe. You can't have good without bad, light without dark.
There has to be some equilibrium.

Other than that, no, things don't happen for a reason.

I remember being told once back in highschool that bad things happen so god can test us, or to teach us something. Now in some ways that can make sense.

But I don't know what you can learn from being raped. What can you learn from contracting a horrific disease? What can a young kid learn from having childhood luekemia?

Bad things just happen sometimes, and they happen to 'good' and 'bad' people alike.

I believe you choose your path on your own day by day. Your actions will have outcomes or sometimes consequences but how you handle it will show the strength, patience and gratitude you have inside. What mindset you have will determine how your life goes. POSITIVE THINKING, POSITIVE OUTCOME. Life is what you make of it. I've learned from experience that thinking negative thoughts and only thinking of what bad could happen has only led to bad events. I started thinking more positively about the struggles I had going on and I ended up coming out the other side a lot better off than I was before the incident. But if you always bash on yourself or think things won't happen in your favor then your doing no help for yourself. Also keep in mind some things don't work out because there's something better down the road. Your body and soul is capable of ANYTHING you put your MIND to. Again mindset is everything. I hope this gets some thinking.. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF LADIES! We're awesome!!🕉❤️

Well tbf I'm a firm believer in determinism. So while I don't think everything happens for a particular reason, I do believe that there are events which will inevitably happen purely because we don't have complete control over our lives.

Sorta kinda. As a Buddhist I believe that you reap what you sew. As an example - if you plant an apple seed in the ground, then it will grow into an apple tree. You can't get upset because you wanted oranges instead of apples, because you did not plant an orange tree. 
It's the same way with life/people. If you hold bitterness inside you and go around with a bitter attitude, you can't get upset when others are bitter toward you - because you did not plant seeds of respect/kindness, you planted seeds of bitterness. 
So when you feel like the world is against you, and feel like nobody treats you kindly - yes. It's probably happening for a reason. You likely brought it upon yourself.

In terms of things happening because it's "gods plan" or the universe wills it, or it's fate or whatever - no. I don't believe in that.
