idea help!

Moms! I need help coming up with idea of things to get! I have a son but I am drawing a blank right now! Mine & my husbands good friends are having there first baby! They aren't finding out what they're having but I want to get them a gift! I don't wanna do the typical buy clothes thing. I was thinking about putting together a bin of practical stuff that most first time parents need & get a bunch of the little stuff like fingernail clippers & so on. What are some items I could get to fill up a little bin?! Doesn't have to be just "newborn" stuff. They don't have a registry yet.
