Elevated FSH - cancelled IVF
I just wanted to share this story and hope that it helps someone else.
My period was due last Saturday and my clinic only does blood tests between 7.30am and 8.45am. I phoned and said my period hadn't arrived but because I was coming off BC I knew it was coming that day. They told me not to come in, and come in on Monday morning. 'No big deal' she said.
Monday morning came - blood test. I was told to expect a call to come and collect meds and kick off my first round of IVF.
The call came and it was the nurse telling me my FSH was too high (17, and they only treat 15 and below), so my first cycle was cancelled. The nurse couldn't tell me anything about FSH so of course I googled it and ended the day curled up in a ball, crying my eyes out after reading that I must have ovarian failure and no real chance of IVF working for me.
I texted my doctor today and he phoned me back. He explained that FSH is actually cyclical within a cycle, so if I started on Saturday we would be underway. I told him that the clinic didn't let me on Saturday and he told me that if they ever do something that I don't agree with, he will intervene for me. Great guy.
Anyway, lessons learnt: be assertive and tell the clinic what you want... You're paying for it! Second lesson: High FSH doesn't mean ovarian failure. Third lesson: don't google, just contact the doctor.
If you've read this far, a huge thank you for indulging me and my story!
