Gifts are not only a tradition, but I think the act of choosing a gift shows two things:
1. You are important enough to think about
2. He is listening to your wants/needs and choosing a gift he feels suits you

I would be furious if he dropped 10k on a ring. 1. Because that just seems like such a waste of money 2. I would be scared shitless to wear it because what if I lost it?
