In the Bible it says your hearts fleshly desires can lead you astray, but it is possible to have a pure heart. The safest way to guidance is checking your motives. Why do you want it? Is it something that will be long term or short term? Is it worth it? Just the normal questions, at the same time if you use just your brain then you can over think. In that area the bible says to gird up the loins of your mind. In other words don't let thoughts go where they shouldn't. Its a balance between heart and brain. Idk if you're a christian, but if you are, the BEST guidance, is to be guided by your spirit and by Holy Spirit. Just giving my view point not trying to push anything on you

It depends on the issue at hand but usually if you take both into consideration then it gives you the opportunity to look at things from all angles. 
Like my heart wants a baby like now. But in my head I know that I should wait till I finish grad school and have more time and energy to devote to my relationship and my future children. In this debate my head is winning right now. And I simply reevaluate every few months.
