confused 🤷‍♀️

I'm unsure if my ex wants to keep texting me cause he has no other girl to talk to or he just genuinely cares for me and wants to be with me again. We broke up because depression took a major toll on him and he needed soul searching but said we promised we would keep talking because we plan to be with each other again. He texts me sweet things but at times is dry and I'm scared he is only doing this because he doesn't wanna be lonely, but if a girl were to appear in his life I'd be forgotten of. (Mind you, I've asked him if he wanted another gf, he said "I want you I just can't be in a relationship right now) Idk, should I read deep into this or not assume the worse and just let things be
