It would depend on the issue and if my partner was putting in an equal amount of effort to make us work.

I wouldn't stay to make him happy, I would stay to try and make it work. If we both made a conscious effort to address the issue and still couldn't come to an agreement then I would have to evaluate the situation and act accordingly.
