What's so wrong with taking self defense classes?

What's wrong with taking self defense classes????
So I was in my way to the store and I by passed this kickboxing class and I thought it was cool, yet my boyfriend says I wasn't built for that. Mind you, I can't scream or squeal, and my boyfriend is 5 hours away, long distance relationship even though tbe distance really isn't anything. Anyways, so what am I supposed to do, my step-dad asked if I wanted to go to the gun range, yet he said i wasn't built for that either!!! Im a single African American female and where I live, they're being snatched up on the daily. God forbid, but if someone tries to get me what am I to do???? I'm thinking of taking the concealed weapons class regardless though, my step-dad said that would be good. And despite the connections my boyfriend has, that says they'll look out for me, I don't believe it at all. Any thoughts or opinions, I'm open to them.

*He always thinks men are after me or something, I don't understand, I feel sheltered all over again, the same way my grandmother raised me, not allowed to do anything...people are people regardless

I say take all the classes you want. Every one has the right to protect them selves.

Anyone can take them. I'm 5'5 and 110 pds yet I've reached black belt in two different styles as well as went to national championship and placed. It's great to learn. You never know what can happen.

Take all the classes you want. No one will be able to protect you better than yourself. If something happens, you're usually alone. Just because you're a woman doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to defend yourself if God forbid you have to. My dad put all of my siblings, boys and girls, in self defense classes and we all know how to properly use guns. It's something you hope you never have to use, but want to know how to defend yourself just in case.

That's ridiculous. I say if you want to take the classes, take them. That's kind of the point- most will teach women moves appropriate to our strengths. Plus it's a good work-out and fun, since hopefully you never have to use what you learn.

Telling you that you weren't built to protect yourself just screams "old fashioned" to me. We live in (what should be) an empowering time where women should be praised for wanting to protect themselves vs being the "damsel in distress" that needs a man to protect her.  If you want to do it, do! Go be a strong woman!

I've been kickboxing for years and had my CHL wayyyy before I met my SO. Exes never had an issue with it and with my SO it's actually a bonding experience for us.

You just tell your boyfriend that you'll decide what you're built for and what you're not built for. And tell him that if he doesn't believe in you, you'll just prove him wrong and then he'll feel stupid. He definitely cannot control what you do by putting you down, so he better start encouraging you if he wants to stay in a relationship with you because that type of talk can definitely grate on your relationship.
