Pacifier question

So for all the ladies breastfeeding, I have a question about paci. I heard moms not give their child one till after child can latch. Is this the best decision and once child latch how many pacis should I have and how often did you have to give it to your child? Much help needed mil who never breastfeed is telling me first thing a baby needs it.

I'm hoping she doesn't use them so I'm going to try and not introduce her to any, I want every chance to be able to breastfeed for as long as possible!

I'm not too sure, I've just read about the possibility of nipple confusion. So I know some women who won't use bottles unless it's a certain type of nipple.

So is pacifiers a way to wing off the breast?

I didn't introduce one right away because it does mess with their latch. And now I am glad I didn't because he is not very interested, he really will only take it when he had been sleepy and just need something to suck on. They say if you use one that it is best if it's only for naps and bed. Of you decide to introduce one, I would recommend using one made by the bottle type you have, it usually is the one they will take, but you may have to try different brands.

We didn't buy one for the first couple of weeks, glad we did cause bubs liked to suck for comfort! He's not attached to it and we only give it to them if he is fighting sleep haha he doesn't like missing out! Or if he gets hungry and I'm not at home to feed him! Wait until bubs is here and then decide! It's not a necessity, and if you get stuck one day shove your little finger in bubs mouth haha guarantee bub will love it 😊 if you live in a place like I do you can buy them from almost anywhere! We've got 2 and every now and then I'll buy another packet! Xx

So my son couldn't latch to my nipples. They were too small .So I had to use a nipple shield. I introduce the paci at the hospital but my son rejected it. My son didn't latch till he was about a month because he was too lazy I would have to force him to wake up to feed. But in that time I introduced the bottle because my pediatrician told me babies won't take the bottle after a month if they do it's harder for them to take. But my son isn't picky at all he will eat anyway I feed him. So it really depends in your baby. He goes from my nipple to the bottle just fine. I try sometimes to see if he will take it but just pisses him off because he doesn't get milk out of it

I gave my oldest a paci before even leaving the hospital. It was a big mistake for us, he was already having trouble latching and using the paci made things worse (nipple confusion). I was never able to get him to latch. He ended up hating and refusing the pacifier at 6 months old. My youngest, I introduced the pacifier when he was a month old, he didn't like it and hasn't used one since. He'll be a year old next month and still nursing. It depends on the baby, so it's hard to say but I've mostly heard to wait until they are 1 month old.

This is all COMPLETELY dependent upon the baby. U shouldn't listen to ur MIL or even us. Just "listen" to what ur baby is saying they need. My 1st breastfed/took a bottle and a paci interchangeable from the begginging no problem. He used it for comfort & sleep time. When he was 1 we decided to take it away and he didn't give us a problem as long as he could keep his blankie. My second wouldn't touch a pacifier everrr & was also breastfed/pumped into a bottle. We'll see what this one wants. They'll show u what they need on their own u just have to watch them carefully to figure it out.

My daughter is one month and I'm breastfeeding and she won't even take a pacifier because she knows the difference between that and my nipple!

I'm breastfeeding, I also give my newborn a paci and she takes a bottle when I pump some too. I started the paci after we got home from the hospital because she just wanted to suck to fall asleep or just for comfort. I would let her cluster feed for awhile but at night I needed my sleep also since I have a 3 year old at home with me too who doesn't nap. But my newborn has been fine with the 3 different types of nipples lol. I guess it all depends on your preference but I have read that pacis are fine during breastfeeding.

If you don't think your baby needs one don't give it! You are the mommy you know best!!
