period sex

In a couple weeks I'll be visiting my boyfriend for only two weeks (LDR) but ill also be on my period. I heard if you have sex while on your period, it helps with cramps and it can even be better than regular sex. So many great things from something so unusual but is it dangerous? Can I cause infections or diseases ? I'm guessing not since no one has spoken of it but I just want to make sure. Thanks !
