Having dogs as children?

Question

How many of you, have had pets as children? Im about to be in my junior year of college, and my boyfriend and I were talking about getting a dog as a pet together, since at the moment we do not really want to have children yet.  🙂

This is Rudy. SO and I have had him for four years (we've been together for 5). He is the best and provides many hours of entertainment for us. But please don't get a dog if you're not ready to have kids. Raising a child is much more difficult than raising a dog, but don't be mistaken at how much work a puppy is. There are too many dogs in shelters because owners rush into getting a pet and realize too late that it wasn't the right decision. But if you have the time, patience and a stable home, then go get yourself a fur baby!!!

My husband & I got our two dogs (French bulldog & English bulldog) in January 2010, about 8 months after we got married. I'm only now pregnant with our first baby, so we definitely did dogs rather than kids for a long time! I do think it's a good intermediate step. HOWEVER, I know so many people who got dogs with boyfriends/girlfriends & the end result was heartbreak for one partner after a breakup led to the other taking primary custody of the dog.... I wouldn't get an animal unless I was at least engaged & preferably married, personally. Also, like others have said, don't underestimate the work of having a dog-- obviously training etc. if you're getting a puppy, plus planning your schedule so that the dog gets taken out regularly to pee, fed regularly, walked daily, & properly cared for if you'll be away.

This is my fur child. I don't love her as much as I love my daughter. But I love her a lot! And I get emotional thinking of the day way she won't be here. Luckily Heelers are known to live a long time.
