exception for cheating?

Is being drunk and exception for cheating? 
My situation is that we were together for about 2 months or so, very early stages. And he went and got absolutely slaughtered one weekend in the city with his mates, his ex lives down there.. and him and his mates had planned to stay at their university flats. To my disgust they (my boyfriend and his ex) slept in the same bed.
See where this is heading? 
Anyway, he'd been really quiet in the past week, he broke the news to me the first night that I saw him after that weekend. 
He told me that he fucked up badly, no kissing occurred, a little foreplay and then maybe the tip went in before he remembered me. He said this while crying a little. He said he doesn't want to lose me and all that jazz. 
I just want to know is being drunk an exception? We've been together for over a year now and he's been the best. Was I wrong for staying?

There's NEVER an exception for cheating! Especially since he waited soooo long to tell you! That would make me even angrier with him.

No there are no exceptions but you're not wrong for staying with him. Sounds like it's been awhile, if you forgive him then you forgive him. No need to dwell on the past unless you think there is a current reason that he can't be trusted.

No drinking is absolutely not an excuse. I've drank many many times and every time I conciously knew what I was doing even the nights I passed out..

You have to think about you personally. Myself I don't accept substance abuse or cheating, even if substance abuse leads to cheating... It's just a person waving flags "I'm a hot mess." Don't ask us for the answer because we don't make the rules. You do!
