a crib for a newborn

I heard that placing a newborn in a crib can cause them to have sudden infant death but I was told as long as I lay my baby on her back she should be fine, what are you mamma's out there think about this? I want to get her a bassinet for the first 6 months because I don't want to risk putting her in the crib..... I am a worry wart she is not here yet but she will be In less then 12 weeks
