Ovarian torsion/ovarian cysts
Hello all! So I wanted to post about my experience with having ovarian cysts, and eventually an ovarian torsion.
All my young adult life I had trouble with my periods. At 16 I was diagnosed with PCOS. With that I would randomly skip periods and go a few months without. When I turned 18 I lost about 50 pounds and my period decided to gone back and has been regular since. First cyst I had experienced was when I was around 19 years old. It was a disabling pain. It was on my right ovary and it felt like I was being stabbed. Come to find out it was 3 cm and it was bursting. So the hospital sent me home with some pain meds and let it run its course. Fine. Off work a few days, eventually went back to normal. Through my entire adult life I would get a cyst here and there every so often that would cause a little discomfort but nothing very concerning.
It was the month of April in 2016. I'm not 24 years old and have been dealing with this for awhile. I started feeling a pain in my right abdomen and decided to call and make an appointment with my OB/GYN. Like I said slight pain, nothing too serious. I go to the doctor and they find a cyst the size of a lemon on my right ovary. Doctor said give it 2 weeks if it doesn't burst itself, they will go in and remove it. Well, later that evening everything just came crashing down. The pain in my right side started becoming an extreme stabbing sharp pain that I could control. My fiancée was at work at the time so I drove myself to our local hospital. They take me in immediately. Full blown bawling my eyes out screaming bloody murder. They inject me with dilaudid, morphine, anything they could to get the pain to go away for at least to make me comfortable. Nothing would work. They decided to do a sonogram on me. The whole time I'm bawling in pain. Finally get back to the room I'm at in the emergency department. Not even 5 mins later the doctor comes in all frantic and says that my right ovary is twisted and has lost all blood supply to it. She said I will be in surgery in the next 15 mins. Keep in mind I was all by myself. Family lived 2 hours away, and my fiancée was at work where he is unable to use his cell phone unless he leave the property. I was terrified! I called my family and they were trying to make it down as fast as possible. But anyways they take me to surgery 15 mins later. Give me something to calm me down because I never had surgery before so I was freaking out! I woke up 4 hours later. They surgery was a little more complicated than they had hoped. They attempted to do a laparoscopy, however my ovary was 5 times it's normal size and didn't fit. So my doctor had to cut into my pelvic area. It had to be at least 4 inches long. Very painful. They released me 2 days later from the hospital. I was on bed rest and pain medication. I was off work for 6 weeks. Miraculously my periods were still regular. The only downside to my surgery was afterwards my left ovary wasn't producing enough hormones so I fell into a bit of depression. But as they days and months went on i got better.
So basically, I wanna say about this post is that you're the only one who knows your body. If something you are truly concerned about and you feel it deep down that something is wrong, go seek help!
