How bad is Zika virus?

I know it's bad for pregnant women to get it. But what if you want to TTC in the future. Does it stay in your body forever and cause birth defects for future pregnancies? I'm going to the Dominican Republc in July with my whole family and to Guatemala with my husband sometime this year too. I want to to TTC either at the end of this year or next year. I'm scared if my husband and I get bit by a mosquito, we'll have Zika and not be able to have healthy kids in the future.
