How do you know you should take Metphormin?

For those who are on Metphormin; why did your doctor say it was right for you? How do you know you have insulin Resistance? I've had my fasting blood sugar tested and its normal. Is the test for IR different?

My general dr was the one that had the suspicion that I might have PCOS, because I was dizzy and feeling poorly and was overweight and I had some facial hair. She ran some test to do with my hormones found out my testosterone was slightly elevated. She wanted me to see an ob/gyn. So then my ob/gyn he did a 2 hour glucose test on me and found I was indeed insulin resistant. That's how I got out on it.

I've had a miscarriage and history of irregular and long cycles. I changed dr's and she did and ultrasound to confirm pcos and put me on metformin right away. I could stand to be healthier yes, but before I got married I lost 70lbs and kept it off so I'm much closer to a healthier weight now. I'm 5'7 and around 180, so not horrible. I'm hoping metformin will help, I'm sitting on cycle day 53 right now.
