when to go to the hospital?

I'm labouring at home for as long as I can. I've been in labour all day, it didn't really get exciting until about 5pm when the contractions got moderately painful. Waters are in tact, but I'm a FTM and not sure when to go to the hospital. My contractions are 4-5 mins apart and I have to breath through them, some make me sweat. I really don't want to go there and get sent home or get told I'm only 3cm but I'm afraid if I wait too long I'll be one of those people who have the baby in the car LOL! Any insight? Do I stick to the 5-1-1 rule? They are only about 45 seconds each. Been like this for a little over an hour now.

Update! 
I was 5cm was I arrived at the hospital!! My bub was stuck sunny side up behind my pelvic bone so once I hit 7.5cm I stopped making progress. I got an epidural and was able to relax enough that she rotated and made her safe arrival yesterday morning!

I had severe pressure and painful but irregular contractions for a few hours. The on call doctor blew me off and said to wait. Well, sure enough an hour and a half later my water broke and contractions became less than 5 minutes apart. Trust your instincts and go when you feel ready. Better to be sent home than have your baby before you make it to the hospital.

Our midwife who teaches a class we are in ( I am having a hospital/Dr labor but I also have a midwife to help with the natural side of of labor) said to do the 4-1-1-1 contractions 4 minutes apart last 1 minute for one hour the add and hour. So 4 minutes apart lasting 1 minute for 2 hours.

It's interesting because the 5-1-1 and 4-1-1 rule are great but a better indication is your mood. If you're more primal that's a sign you're transitioning. I had contractions every 3 minutes for about 4 hours before I went in and I was 4cm, the catch is I was 3cm at my appointment the week before.

I went to the hospital when my contractions were 1 min 46 seconds apart and I was 3cm. My body wasnt catching up with the contraction but thank god I was able to push 7 hours later.

I'd stick to the 5-1-1 rule. Better to be safe and a lil embarrassed you get sent home again than to end up giving birth on the side of the highway in your car on the way

Maybe call L&D and ask them, but if they're that consistent They'll most likely tell you to go in
