how long should you wait

Hi, my husband and I have been ttc for 2 years now. It's so draining that we've decided to take a break this year. I've been tested and all is well so I asked that he gets tested too in preparation for when we start to try again next year.

His GP told him to refrain from any sexual activity for 24 hours prior to going to give a sample but apparently when he got to the hospital, the form he filled only had options for 3 & 5 days.

Can this invalidate his test? Can someone please tell me how long you have to refrain from any sexual activity before going to get tested? Thanks
