birth control - late period?

i got the depo shot on january 9 and i still haven't started my period. i had sex around a week after i got it and he pulled out, i don't think i'm pregnant, my period has been very irregular lately and i'm just really freaking out. i keep thinking that i've started and then another day passes without it. what i'm getting at is can the shot delay my period, and how effective is it if i have unprotected sex a week after i get it but he pulls out?
