What is this "self soothing" people speak of???

Question

My baby has fallen asleep twice on her own, ever. And both times in her stroller with the movement.

Other babies lay down in their cribs and fall asleep on their own? That's actually a thing? Am I doing something wrong?

Ayla only falls asleep on the breast or being bounced to sleep in our arms. What are ways to start getting her to sleep on her own? (Not into CIO).

Same here! Wish I had advice but I'm just here to say we are in the same boat! Bounced or boob. Sometimes she let's me sit on the yoga ball to bounce but not usually, and forget rocking!! Doesn't take a paci. Have tried a hot water bottle to warm up the bed before laying her down, laying her down drowsy but I don't believe in cry it out for my babe so I just go in and sooth her a bunch. She doesn't like to be swaddled with arms in but I have been having luck with her Halo sleep swaddle sack you can do arms in or out and she seems to sleep a little better on her own when wearing it. Actually not every baby cries to self soothe. The idea is to put baby down drowsy but not asleep and let them fall asleep, like we do. This is important as they get older so they have techniques to soothe themselves when they wake up in the middle of the night. Cry it our should only last a few nights. I still nurse or bounce my 3 month old. I'm not doing any sort of sleep training, and still studying which, until 6 months but my son sucks his son which is soothing. We hear him at night and instead of rushing to him we wait to see what he does. Most of the time he sticks his thumb in his mouth and falls back to sleep. If he really needs something he will fuss and we go to him. That's self soothing. As far as falling asleep from the start....not there yet

My baby is not crying it out. I just put her in her crib, let her crib mobile toy play a couple of times and she usually falls asleep in a few minutes. Now that we are going through a sleep regression she fusses and cries a bit, if she stops crying in 1-2 minutes ok, otherwise I will calm her and then put her back to crib.

When my LO is super sleepy/cranky and it's time for a nap, I'll bounce/rock him a bit, then put him down (in bassinet, crib, car seat or rocker), dip his pacifier in a bottle of gas drops (or gripe water, etc), stick it in his mouth and play calming music. He falls asleep right away now.

Many people may not agree, because this is a "crutch", but it gets him to sleep quickly - not in my arms or on the boob!! And I've been weaning him off of the pacifier part. The "Weightless" album by Marconi Union is like ambien for him now. Must try!

Finding the perfect timing and signs of sleepy cues is key. You want to put them down before they get tired. Usually when they cry it's cause they are overtired

I wouldn't say I let my daughter cry it out, but if we put her down asleep or drowsy and she starts full on crying then we go in and try a pacifier or cuddles. But I found a couple times I couldn't get to her right away and she fell back asleep on her own. So now unless it's been 3-4 hours since a feeding i try a pacifier or letting her cry for a couple min to see if she will relax again. I think as moms we're so quick to rush in and comfort.

I put on white noise and leave the room. I hear him moving around and making noise but I won't let him scream. We stay on a schedule so he knows it's nap time or bed time

It's when baby is left to cry until they pass out. I don't agree with it in any way. ... not even an 1 year old.  If she needs her mommy,  I'M HERE any time,  every time.

She fell asleep in her crib today for nap time!!! All on her own, hallelujah. I put her down a little earlier than normal, kept the house quiet and most importantly, didn't go near here. But honestly I've done that before and it didn't work. I think she just wasn't ready for it until now.
