Switching jobs while pregnant?

Hello,

I am 10 weeks pregnant and have a promising 2nd interview tomorrow for a new job.

Pros: close to home (commuting 45-1 hour each way now) more $$ , field based/work from home, flexible schedule...

Cons: switching insurance, risk of maternity leave policy for being employed less than a year, starting a new job when pregnant!

Anyone else that has been in a similar position?

If they know you are pregnant and still want to hire you you should go for it. Of course they can't not hire you because you're pregnant and tell you that but sometimes they will make up other excuses. Sounds like this is better for you so you should go for it

I just started a new job last week at 10 weeks pregnant. It's unfortunate though, I won't have accumulated a lot of time to take off once the baby comes, but in the long run it's a better opportunity. I say go for it! A man would never have to make these kinds of sacrifices. I mean, weigh all the pros and cons but don't limit yourself in advance - shoot for getting a job offer so you can at least make a choice. I wouldn't ask about benefits at the interview. If they extend you an offer - then you can ask to see benefit information if they don't already provide it to make your decision if you'd like to accept or not.

I started a job and got pregnant within a month. I haven't told anyone yet, but figured if they have a problem with it, it's not the type of company I want to work for anyways. I say go for it. It's only three months out of many years (hopefully) of a positive working relationship.

I'm in the same position too. But at the new position I would have better insurance, better pay but longer hours and more standing on my feet... so I dont know if I would be able to work up until my delivery date. It's hard to weigh the pros and cons. Maybe at your interview you can ask about how maternity leave would work? You don't have to tell them you're pregnant. You could just say you are wondering for the future. Thats what I would do

I am about to start a new job next week but in the same field. I am a hair stylist. Thankfully it's only a six month lease for the chair rental agreement because I'll be going on maternity leave towards the end of August( if I make it to my due date). I didn't mention I'm pregnant to the owner of the salon but I'll have to bring that my tummy is growing. This is my third child. This job will be a much better opportunity for me to make money but as a hair stylist we don't have maternity leave really. I took off three-four months with my last baby who is now almost ten months old. I'm very excited about this new job. Good luck to us all!

Thanks for the advice! They want to move forward with an offer but I will make sure I review leave policies and benefits. It is for a healthcare provider which is great but I would have to switch insurance from Kaiser to theirs most likely, but I really liked my new dr. Oh well in the long run it's better :)

Have you heard about COBRA? You can continue to your health insurance even if you leave your job for a certain time frame.

Same boat! I accepted a new job and found out three days after I started that i was pregnant. I'm now 9 weeks. I'm trying to make it through my 3-mo before saying anything, but it's already been tough with the appointments. I figure, like someone else just said, if they judge me or have a problem with it, there's nothing I can do. Go front! Especially if it'll be better for you and baby in the long run!
I've been in a previous job where they handled it but the owner would joke that she hated when it happened. It's tough for women... I wish it didn't have to feel like you can't commit to both. We can!

Due to some drama with my in-laws while I was pregnant with my son in 2014, I had to switch career fields completely to get a job making more money when I was 6 months pregnant. It was a temp job with a 3 month contract. I didn't tell anyone (even my temp agency) but after a few weeks a couple of employees quietly asked me when I was due. I was really sad because I LOVED the company and they wanted me to come back and be a permanent employee after I had my son but I ended up getting a job where I could work from home instead.

I say all of this to make the point: do what you have to do for your family! Whether or not you tell the employer is up to you but if it is a place you'd want to stay long-term I would think it would be better to be up front about the pregnancy. I wasn't because, well, it was a temp job and I didn't know if I'd like working there!
