Everyone has one fertile day. You release and egg and it lives for 24 hours before it starts to degrade. Now you can have sex up to 5 days before that fertile day and sperm can live in you that long, but you won't be fertile until you release that egg. Sex before you ovulate is supposed to be the best, the sperm would already be waiting for the egg when it reaches its destination, mean the sperm meets the best quality egg possible. =)
