drying up milk

Kayla
I've decided to switch to formula (for multiple reasons) and want to dry up my milk. My doctor told me to stop cold turkey and just deal with the pain. But where does the milk in my breasts go? Does my body internally drain it? I'm dying over here 😫

When I stopped, I did it gradually and never was in a lot of pain. I had been exclusively pumping and just started putting more time between sessions. After a few days, I was pumping 2-3 times a day. I only pumped for a few minutes, just enough to help with discomfort. I was done in 7-8 days, with only pumping 1 time a day at the end. I could be wrong, but I thought stopping all at once could lead to clogged milk ducts/mastitis.

I've heard cabbage leaves on your breasts will dry it up faster.

Do not stop cold turkey. I did with my first and ended with a very very VERY bad case of mastitis. I cried in agony and couldn't even breath. I just had my second boy and she said I should've eased into stopping. This time around I am praying breast feeding works but at least I know what to do if it doesn't work.

This seems so weird but when I wanted to stop my milk literally just stopped. Like my brain said no more and my body said ok! I was super surprised and I'm sure hat doesn't always happen but it did for me!

BUT I forgot to mention I had started supplementing with formula so I skipped two feedings a day for about a week then fully stopped.

Have you tried cabbage inside your bra? That helped me a lot surprisingly.

Hand express when you get engorged. Massage lumps in the shower, use hot water

Hand express just a little bit so the engorgement doesn't hurt so bad, but not too much or else your body will think it needs to produce even more! Also like the other comment says, cabbage leaves in your bra will help with the pain. And if you have a super tight bra, that can also help to dry it up.

Also these may help with slowing down and stopping your supply a little faster

**and you won't over do the cabbage if you want to completely stop it, so do it as much as you need
